Celebrated singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Amy Helm has shared a new single, “Amen Anyways,” a feature of her impending full-length album, Silver City, due on September 6 via Sun Records. The track contemplates fear and loss, presented using Helm’s signature narrative form, to bring the listener into lyrically generated scenes that inspire resilience when facing hardships.
Helm encounters sharp themes of loss, desperation, and fear in the wake of the human experience on the new track, with particular consideration regarding the passing of loved ones. A haunting presentation produced through simple instrumentals to illuminate her vocal strengths, “Amen Anyways” represents a woman’s experience, an intimate mingling of determination and willingness to stomp on.
“The song is about being paralyzed with the fear of not being good enough and lacking faith in ourselves,” Helm explains via press release. “It’s also about being surrounded by people who handle that with drugs and alcohol—it’s about losing people to that.”
“Amen Anyways” arrives after Helm’s initial LP preview, “Baby Come Back.” Silver City was recorded at Helm’s father’s Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, N.Y., and represents her fourth full-length album. Overall, the set represents a celebration of feminine power to push forward.
