Big Thief have announced Max Olearchik’s departure from the band. The ensemble posted a message on social media projecting the bassist’s choice of egress, a decision that arrives eight years into the group’s shared musical history, highlighted across a collection of five album entries, ranging from debut Masterpiece to 2022’s Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You.
Delivered alongside a collection of photos showcasing moments between bandmates Adrianne Lenker, Buck Meek, James Krivchenia and Olearchik, the group wrote: “After many beautiful years together, Max is no longer in Big Thief. Our love for each other is infinite, and we are so grateful for all we have shared these many years together since the beginning of our journey as a band.”
“We wouldn’t be who we are without Max. This separation marks the end of an era, and the beginning of a new one for Big Thief,” they continued. Members provided some reasoning behind the change and emphasized, “This change was made for interpersonal reasons with mutual respect in our hearts. It’s a big change for us and the four of us ask for your trust, respect, and care as we grow into the next chapter of our lives.”
At this time, Big Thief is scheduled to pick up an ensuing series of live appearances beginning on July 27, when they take part in Portland, Ore.’s Project Pabst, before embarking on a European tour, slated to start on August 6 in Sweden.
