Newport Jazz Festival has unveiled the initial artist lineup for its 2024 presentation, set to return to Newport, R.I.’s Fort Adams State Park from August 2-4. This year, the standard-setting festival will celebrate its 70th anniversary with a downright stacked program curated in collaboration with Newport Jazz Artistic Director Christian McBride, featuring a vast array of genres related to the event’s jazz core. André 3000, Nile Rodgers & CHIC, Kamasi Washington and Elvis Costello will lead this historic presentation, topping a bill of more than fifty iconic acts with further still to be announced.

Beyond the impressive cohort of headliners, Newport Jazz Festival’s 2024 lineup also boasts solo presentations from artists and bandleaders like Robert Glasper, Brittany Howard, Cory Wong, Laufey, Noname, Meshell Ndegeocello, Chief Adjuah, Samara Joy, aja monet and more. In keeping with its history, the three-day celebration will also welcome some of the premiere ensembles from jazz’s myriad microcosms, including Ghost-Note, Christian McBride’s Jam Jawn, Bill Frisell Four, The Messthetics & James Brandon Lewis, the Grammy-nominated Dinner Party–featuring Kamasi Washington, Terrace Martin and Robert Glasper–and a celebration of the legacy of the great Wayne Shorter.

Other standouts from this year’s lineup include a special duo performance from Makaya McCraven and Jeff Parker, the debut of Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad’s Acid Jazz is Dead, NOLA funk pioneers Galactic with the legendary Irma Thomas, genre-bending downtempo duo Thievery Corporation and the ever-evolving Sun Ra Arkestra, led by the soon-to-be 100-year-old multi-instrumentalist Marshall Allen. This bold bill continues Newport Jazz Festival’s legacy as perhaps the most esteemed music festival in the country, and indeed the grandfather of all American music festivals.
