On Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2024, Red Hot Chili Peppers performed a concert at Yaamava’ Theater in Highlands, Calif. During the show, which occurred in support of the group’s latest batch of new music, dubbed Unlimited Love, founding member Flea, invited special guest, Kamasi Washington to add sax to their LP cut “Aquatic Mouth Dance.” Watch below.

Flea is a long admirer of the jazz music canon and notably studied trumpet under Washington’s father, Rickey. Further embracing the genre and its layered expressions, the aforementioned team-up occurred during the latter half of Tuesday’s main frame, when Flea addressed the audience: “Ladies and gentlemen, we’d like to invite our friend, Kamasi Washington, up to play saxophone on this song. We love him–he’s the best saxophone player…”

The funky display reached heights formally unknown with the addition of Washington’s extraordinary instrumentation, which mingled with Flea’s thick bass line and lead singer Anthony Kiedis’ lyrical presentation. Collectively, the musicians jammed through the newer tune, with Chad Smith acting as the band’s heartbeat and John Frusciante striking a groove as the song built to epic proportions around the video’s 5:40 mark.

Following Tuesday’s sit-in, Red Hot Chili Peppers will appear at the Innings Festival on Friday, Feb. 23.
