Celebrated guitar virtuoso Julian Lage has shared the latest preview of his impending Blue Note album Speak To Me, due out on March 1, 2024. Today’s release represented the fourth single to be shared from the collection of new music and has been paired alongside a live performance video that lingers on the acoustic guitar-driven ballad, “Nothing Happens Here.” Watch below.

Apart from Lage’s shining contributions on the track, the celebrated artist also tapped Kris Davis on piano, Patrick Warren on keys, Levon Henry on saxophone, Dave King on drums, and Jorge Roeder on bass. The live performance video was notably captured at the SFJAZZ, an all-ages music venue based in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley neighborhood.

“What a joy it was to perform ‘Nothing Happens Here’ live with the Speak To Me album band in San Francisco last month,” says Lage via press release. “Though we recorded this music as a band in the studio, to perform it live feels like an entirely different beast. It is such a treat to be playing acoustic guitar amidst a larger sonic field, while still being able to hear everything so clearly. It is surreal and totally lovely.”

Lage presents a series of 13 original tracks, initially introduced through the first sonic deliverables: the bluesy “76” and acoustic “As It Were.” The musician continued sampling, giving fans and followers another listen to the imminent album with the swinging third single, “Omission.” Commenting on his approach differing from past LPs, Lage said, “Throughout my life, I’ve always responded to music that has a narrative quality to it.”

“I believe there is a kind of connective tissue that music has, and it’s important, and it’s fun to cultivate,” the artist added, capping a continued thought. Speak To Me leans into a web of musical approaches intertwined with elements of rural blues, gospel hymns and raw jazz moments.
