On Thursday, Jan. 18, Greensky Bluegrass played the fifth show in its winter tour at the Ritz in Raleigh, N.C. This event was the first of three dates featuring support from Duane Betts, leader of Duane Betts & Palmetto Motel and son of Dickey Betts, founding member of the Allman Brother Band. During the evening’s program, Betts joined the band for two songs, including the Allman Brothers Band’s “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More.”

Greensky Bluegrass kicked off the concert with Robin Davis’ “Prom Night,” followed by “Run Or Die” and “Room Without a Roof” from the group’s 2016 project Shouted, Written Down & Quoted. Next came “Cut a Tooth,” from its latest studio album Stress Dreams, then “In Control,” “All for Money,” “All Four” and finally Talking Heads’ rapturous “Road to Nowhere”–now a tour staple for the bluegrass ensemble–to close the set.

Betts took the stage during the second set, walking on after the band performed The Stanley Brothers’ “How Mountain Girls Can Love,” “Stress Dreams,” “Fixin’ to Ruin,” “Bottle Dry” and “Better Off.” The acclaimed guitarist joined the band for “I’d Probably Kill You” before moving on to a hypnotic, moving rendition of “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More,” from the Allman Brothers Band’s iconic 1972 album Eat a Peach. Afterwards, as Betts exited the stage, Paul Hoffman announced to the audience that the cover “just felt so right.” Greensky Bluegrass concluded the second set with live favorites “33433” and “Kerosene,” then capped off the show with an encore of “Old Barns”

Greensky Bluegrass will perform with Duane Betts & Palmetto Motel again tonight, 1/20, at the Eastern in Atlanta; next, the band begins its Northeast run on Feb. 1 at College Street Music Hall in New Haven, Conn.
