Michael McDonald has announced the release of his impending memoir, What A Fool Believes: A Memoir, due on May 21, 2024, via Dey Street Books. The memoir was co-written with actor, comedian, and bestselling author Paul Reiser.

What A Fool Believes follows McDonald’s career as a member of two of the most successful rock groups of all time, the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan. Via press release, the project was described as, “Interwoven with unforgettable tales from his storied career and a cast of music greats including James Taylor, Ray Charles, Carly Simon and Quincy Jones, What A Fool Believes finds McDonald reckoning with the unshakeable insecurities that drove him and the highs and lows of fame and popularity. Along the way, he relays the hard-earned lessons he has learned.”

Reiser and McDonald first met at a party a few years ago. While McDonald recognized Reiser as a comedian, the five-time Grammy winner did not realize his new acquaintance was also a strong pianist and songwriter in his own right. They forged a friendship that has culminated in the creation of What A Fool Believes, the title taken from one of McDonald’s most successful solo songs.

Before the book is released, McDonald will take the stage at The Moody Center in Austin, Texas, for the last date in the Doobie Brother’s 50th Anniversary Tour on Jan. 28. He will also join Patti LaBelle on the aptly named “The Michael McDonald and Patti LaBelle Cruise” from April 10-13.
