Last July, the New York City Council granted approval for the renaming of the southwest corner of Ludlow and Rivington as Beastie Boys Square, commemorating the iconic Paul’s Boutique album cover. Today, the official renaming ceremony took place from noon to 2 p.m. and was attended by Mike D and Ad-Rock. The event also featured a DJ set by Jon Bless, along with various pop-up activations, live screen printing and more.
LeRoy McCarthy, renowned for his involvement in establishing Staten Island’s Wu-Tang Clan District and Brooklyn’s Christopher “Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace Way, spearheaded the decade-long campaign for this name change. The effort gained momentum with the support of District 1 Council Member Chris Marte.
In addition to the dedication ceremony, the Spike Jonze-directed documentary, Beastie Boys Story, which premiered in 2020, made its theatrical debut at the IFC Center in Greenwich Village with screenings yesterday and today.
