Last night, Trey Anastasio reunited with his eponymous outfit, Trey Anastasio Band, for their first full performance of the year at the Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore, Md. To celebrate the kick-off, saxophonist James Casey joined the band for a touching encore cover of the Five Stairsteps’ “O-o-h Child.”

Prior to last night’s show, Anastasio had recently staged three shows at Denver’s Mission Ballroom under the Trey Anastasio Trio name, featuring drummer John Fishman and bassist Dezron Douglas. Notably, later in the year, Anastasio plans to reactivate the Classic TAB configuration with drummer Russ Lawton, keyboardist Ray Paczkowski, and Douglas for a series of festival appearances and headlining dates.

The show commenced with the energetic “Everything’s Right,” followed by the groovy “Camel Walk” and a vibrant rendition of “Blaze On,” featuring altered lyrics of “dancing by the water.” The band continued to captivate the audience with heartfelt performances of “Mercy,” “Hey Stranger,” “Back on the Train,” “Set Your Soul Free,” “Pigtail,” and the infectious “Sand.”

In the second set, Trey Anastasio Band kicked off with the captivating “A Wave of Hope,” leading seamlessly into “Cayman Review” and “Undermind.” The audience was treated to the soulful “Sweet Dreams Melinda” and the mesmerizing “…And Flew Away.” The energy reached new heights with the crowd-pleasing “Gotta Jibboo,” followed by “About to Run,” “The Moma Dance,” and “Push On ‘Til the Day.”

During the encore, Casey took the helm on the 1970 R&B classic, a song Trey Anastasio Band hadn’t performed since 2017. Allowing the weighty cover to speak for itself without any formal announcement. While Anastasio typically sings lead vocals on the song, this version showcased his feelings through a powerful guitar solo. Anastasio then embraced Casey in a heartfelt hug before introducing the horn section, his voice filled with emotion.

Trey Anastasio Band’s tour continues tonight, July 7, with the first of two shows at Asbury Park, N.J.’s Stone Pony Summer Stage. Fans can visit the band’s website for ticket information and a full list of tour dates.
