As previously reported, Tracy Chapman became the first black woman in history to have a sole songwriting credit on a No. 1 country hit after Luke Combs’ covered her 1988 staple track “Fast Car” on his latest LP, Gettin’ Old. Chapman responded to the honor in an exclusive interview with Billboard, where she deemed the record-breaking accolade an honor.

Chapman stated: “I never expected to find myself on the country charts, but I’m honored to be there.” Her comment continued, “I’m happy for Luke and his success and grateful that new fans have found and embraced ‘Fast Car.’”

The songwriter’s remarks arrived after Combs’ take on the staple song ascended from No. 8 to No. 4 on the Hot 100, surpassing the No. 6 high for the Chapman original. As of this week, the cover rose once again, reaching No. 2.

“Fast Car” has been admired by other musicians in the past, having been covered by contemporary artists such as Khalid, Justin Beiber, Sam Smith and more, and remains a fan favorite for generations who have clung to the heart-tugging lyrics pertaining to poverty, love and resilience.
