On Monday, May 1, music titan Gordon Lightfoot died due to natural causes at age 84. Fellow Canadian artist, Neil Young, paid tribute to the “Sundown” singer on his Archives website, where he shared some sentiments on his friend’s departure.

On his official website, Young wrote, “I just spoke to Gordon a few weeks back and he sounded happy, although he had cancelled some shows and was re-organizing his touring. I was saddened when i learned today of his passing. Gordon was a great Canadian artist.”

He concluded his statement by adding, “A songwriter without parallel, His melodies and words were an inspiration to all writers who listened to his music, as they will continue to be through the ages. There is a unique and wonderful feeling to Gordon’s music. Lightfoot is a Canadian legend.”

In the past, Young has integrated covers of Lightfoot’s original material into his live shows, such as cuts of “If You Could Read My Mind” and “Early Morning Rain.” Watch Young’s delivery of the Sit Down Young Stranger favorite below.
