Phish’s Trey Anastasio sat down with Ari Fink for a new game called Name That Room on SiriusXM’s Phish Radio. During the segment, Fink unleashed recordings from past jams that had taken place over the past 30 years of Phish’s live performances and had the guitarist guess where the jam took place. The full video of “Name That Room” can be viewed on-demand here.
Over the course of the game, Fink picked just four segments and did his best to stump Anastasio, who, given the task at hand, did reasonably well though Fink did offer help here and there. After the game show ended, the two went on to talk about Anastasio’s rig and the changes it went through since their Halloween Las Vegas Run in 2016 until Phish’s performances at New York’s Madison Square Garden earlier this year.
“I love my old guitar sound, but it was not reliant on power tubes. It was a more processed guitar sound at the front end. Power tube distortion is where the emotion is.” The game show task led to Anastasio thinking about different elements of his setup and how it evolved; he added, “It’s not just buying a new amp. You have to do everything – you have to match the speaker to the amp and then try grill cloth; we tried every kind of wood for the cabinets.”
