Over the weekend on Nov. 4, 5 and 6, moe. performed at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, Colo., in celebration of the venue’s 30th anniversary. During the run on Sunday – which coincided with the one-year anniversary of guitarist Chuck Garvey’s stroke – the band announced that Garvey would be joining them onstage during their New Year’s Eve show at The Fillmore in Philadelphia via a note read by moe.’s Al Schnier.

Over the weekend, moe. was comprised of Schnier, Rob Derhak, Jim Loughlin, Vinnie Amico, Michael “Suke” Cerulo, along with Nate Wilson of Blue Star Radiation and Ghosts Of Jupiter. The musicians opened up the celebration on Nov. 4 with “Buster” before ripping into a six-song jam comprised of “World” > “Ricky Marten” > “Time Ed” > “Puebla” > “Kyle’s Song” into a closing cover of The Allman Brothers Band’s “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed.” The following set was also a non-stop jam, again featuring an uninterrupted run of six tracks starting with “Rebubula,” which melded into “Plane Crash” and then “Yodelittle” into “St. Augustine” and finally “George” into 1996’s “Rebubula.” To close the evening, they encored with a cover of Led Zepplin’s “Immigrant Song.”

The following evening moe. returned to the beloved institution and got the flow in motion with the Grateful Dead’s “West L.A. Fadeaway.” They then jammed from “Johnny Lineup” into “Sensory Deprivation Bank.” They rounded the frame out with “Letter Home,” “ATL,” and a pairing of “Silver Sun” into “Lazarus.” The second set took off running with “Head” into “Tubing The River Styx,” into “The Pit,” and finally “Timmy Tucker,” before rousing eruptions of applause from the crowd. They rounded the set with a bookended run of “McBain” into “Interstellar Overdrive” back into “McBain.” For the encore, Schnier said some kind words before they performed “Good Guys and Bad Guys.”

The final evening, which took place last night, Nov. 6, began with “Moth” > “Skrunk” > “Blue Jeans Pizza.” They then ripped through “Skitchin’ Buffalo” before moving through yet another extended jam this time comprised of “Not Coming Down” > “Can’t Find My Way Home” > “Wormwood” and finally into “OkayAlrighgt.”

The second frame had the fewest individual tracks of the weekend; however, the ensemble stretched and grooved over each with vigor and respect the iconic venue’s 30th anniversary warranted. The set began with “Recreational Chemistry,” which morphed into “Meat.” Next, they returned to “Moth,” which gave way to set closer “Low Rider Jam.” Once again, Schnier said a few words in the form of his “al.nouncements” before he read the note from Garvey. The note read, “Today marks the one-year anniversary of my worst day ever. I scared my wife, my family, my friends, and many of you who heard of my stroke. Thank you for your well-wishes and your donations, without which my recovery would not have happened. This year has been a really long, difficult one for me, but a rewarding one, in that I learned what a person needs to do to achieve goals. Some are basic, everyday things like speech, and some are more about universal things that I noticed about family, friends, and community that keep us all afloat.” They then performed two last songs to close the celebration: “Jazz Cigarette” and “Downward Facing Dog.”

moe.’s New Year’s shows and the return of Garvey are on sale now and will feature support from Eggy. Find tickets and learn more here.
