On Sept. 2, Dave Matthews Band kicked off their annual three-day run at The Gorge Amphitheatre, the breathtaking outdoor venue approximately 150 miles outside Seattle. The lively ensemble began their multi-day stand on Friday night alongside the mighty Columbia River with a handful of rarities and bust-outs. To follow up on the opening night, the troupe took the fabled stage on Saturday, where they welcomed the show openers Eric Krasno and Celisse to independently contribute to song selections that landed during the latter half of the night’s set.
After opening up Friday’s show with a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Fool in the Rain,” the band continued with fan favorite “Warehouse,” which featured an improvised intro, before working their way into Daniel Lanois’ “The Maker.” Next, Dave Matthews Band performed several tunes from across their massive repertoire, emphasizing 2001’s Everyday and 2018’s Come Tomorrow.
Then, they turned the pages of their impressive songbook and landed on the first post-pandemic “Drunken Salior” since Sept. 7, 2019. From there, they slipped into “Seek Up” before the band busted out their second number of the night, this time “Eh Hee,” last performed by Matthews and Tim Reynolds at their tropical music-infused escape to Riviera Maya, Mexico, on Feb. 3, 2017. Moreover, the last time the entire band played the number was July 2, 2013, making the song choice rather memorable for those attending Friday’s show.
To follow up on Friday’s striking display, the Dave Matthews Band arrived on stage Saturday to run through a tour of albums past. The group worked through a variety of material from across their expansive catalog until they landed on the night’s bust-out “Joyride,” which was last played on July 27, 2019, at Coral Sky Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, Fla. “Stay or Leave” was performed next, before the group worked into “#41,” “If Only” and “So Much to Say.”
Saturday’s display continued with “The Dreaming Tree,” which was played before a take on Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” and the original “Squirm.” Then, the night’s first guest, Eric Krasno, who served as one of the show’s openers, took the stage to assist on “Break Free,” adding his well-strummed chords to the 2006 number.
“So Damn Lucky” came after Krasno exited the stage, leaving the band to take on the 2003 tune off Some Devil. The show proceeded with “Everyday” before Celisse joined in on a cover of Bob Dylan’s seminal track, “All Along the Watchtower,” which included a partial run-through of “Stairway to Heaven.” After Celisse left the stage, the band threw in “Two Step” before working into the night’s encores: “Oh” and “Stay (Wasting Time).”
Dave Matthews Band will return to the fabled stage this evening at The Gorge Amphitheatre for the final stand of their annual Labor Day Weekend affair. After, the ensemble will pack up and head to Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre in Greenwood Village, Colo., on Sept. 9. Tickets for Dave Matthews Band’s upcoming gigs can be purchased here.
