On July 3, the Kitchen Dwellers welcomed Billy Strings to the stage for some tunes during their performance at Baltimore’s The 8×10. Today, the Bozeman, Mont. band has shared two covers from the Sunday night gig, including a take on Bob Dylan’s “Tombstone Blues” and Bill Monroe’s “Big Mon.” Watch below.
The evening kicked off with the title track off 2017’s Ghost in the Bottle, which segued into the traditional “Cuckoo’s Nest.” “Drowning (…Again),” off the ensemble’s 2022 album, Wise River, came next. Then, the Kitchen Dwellers dug into “The Crown,” followed by “Stand at Ease.”
For their next tune, the band welcomed bluegrass prodigy, Strings to the stage to help out on the Béla Fleck 1988 original, “Whitewater,” off the LP, Drive. Watch a fan-shot clip of the performance here. Then, the sit-in continued with a cover of Dylan’s 1965 number, “Tombstone Blues,” performed with a bluegrass edge, unlike the original, which carries more classic rock and roll energy.
Strings stuck around for one more tune, this time a take on Monroe’s “Big Mon,” which stretched over 11-minutes – the song was initially released by Monroe and His Blue Grass Boys in 1965; last night’s rendition stayed faithful to the original, as the ensemble worked through the classic number.
After Strings left the stage, Kitchen Dwellers continued their set with a jam section that began with “Foundation,” which bled into “Welcome to the Machine” and ultimately returned to “Foundation.” For the final tune of the main set, the band played “Timebomb.” Then, after a brief break, they returned to finish the night with an encore take on Nirvana’s “Breed.”
