Last night, The String Cheese Incident performed two sets at the inaugural Daze Between Festival in New Orleans. The ensemble welcomed former member of The Motet, Lyle Divinsky, who offered vocals on the second set opener. The show featured fan-favorite covers and a few tunes off the band’s latest EP, Into The Blue.
The show got underway with “Missin’ Me” off Carnival ‘99, which segued into 1997’s “Black Clouds.” They followed up with the title track from Born on the Wrong Planet, which melted into a take on The Meter’s seminal 1969 track “Cissy Strut.” Then, the band jammed their way from the soul instrumental back into “Born on the Wrong Planet” before busting into 2010’s “Pygmy Pony.”
Next, The String Cheese Incident played 2006’s “Rain” and followed with the title track off their latest EP, Into the Blue. Then, for the final song of their first set, the Colorado natives performed 1998’s “Restless Wind,” off the LP, ‘Round the Wheel.
The band opened set two by welcoming Divinsky for a take on “Get To You.” The song was released by The String Cheese Incident in 2019 and featured the former Motet vocalist, making for an exceptional live performance for the band and their collaborator. Then, after a monumental sit-in, the band played the traditional tune “I Know You Rider,” which segued into a take on Bob Marley’s “Stir It Up” and ultimately return to “I Know You Rider” to cap off the three-part jam.
For their next tune, they played “World Gone Crazy,” which debuted during The String Cheese Incident’s New Year’s Eve run in Chicago, followed by “Gone Crooked” and another new tune off the band’s latest LP, “Hi Ho No Show.” Next, they covered Talking Head fan-favorite “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody),” which segued into the final song of the second set, 2006’s “Just One Story.”
For their encore in The Big Easy, The String Cheese Incident played a pairing of 2000’s “Barstool” into a cover of The Stanley Brother’s classic folk tune, “How Mountain Girls Can Love.” Yesterday’s performance follows an epic May 3 gig which featured Billy Strings, who sat in with the band for a take on 2001’s “Close Your Eyes” off Outside Inside.
