Today, Bay Area Collective Moonalice shared their anticipated studio EP, Full Moonalice Vol. 1, in celebration of the high holiday of April 20, via Nettwerk.

The EP was mixed and co-produced by four-time Grammy Award-winning engineer Davy Way, who is known for his work with Fiona Apple, Pink and Nora Jones. The project showcases the psychedelic soulful sounds of Moonalice’s live shows.

The EP includes three previously released tracks: “Let’s Get Funky,” “People Get Ready,” and “Woo Woo.” It also features an extended version of “Time Has Come Today” and is rounded out by two other singles. Arriving with the release is the music video for their cover of Bobby “Blue” Bland’s song “Turn on Your Lovelight,” which includes a gospel-style arrangement from Barry Sless and vocals from Dylan Chambers and the T Sisters.

Along with Sless (lead guitar and pedal steel) and Sears (bass) Roger McNamee (guitar) formed Moonalice and recorded their 2007. The lineup has since expanded to include John Molo (drums), Jason Crosby (keyboards), and, in 2019, Lester Chambers (vocals, harmonica) and his son Dylan Chambers (vocals), along with Erika, Rachel, and Chloe Tietjen of acclaimed Americana band the T Sisters on vocals.

“An important part of Moonalice is the notion that each of us has an opportunity to make a difference,” McNamee said in a press release. “We’ve survived a pandemic and a zillion other things. It makes sense to look forward and think about the positive, and remind people that they have a shot at a better day ahead.”

The release today marks a reoccurring theme for Moonalice; they played their first concert at a marijuana benefit in 2007 and have campaigned for the legalization of cannabis ever since. One of their top songs is titled “It’s 4:20 Somewhere” which has over 4.6 million downloads making it the most download song directly from a band’s website.

Along with the release of Full Moonalice Vol. 1, the band will also celebrate the holiday with a hometown show at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall on Friday, April 22.
