The Red Hot Chili Peppers have released their latest single, “Poster Child,” off their upcoming album, Unlimited Love, due out April 1. The LP will serve as the band’s first offering since 2016’s The Getaway and their first with guitarist John Frusciante since 2006’s hit album Stadium Arcadium.

The track encapsulates the classic and quintessential Red Hot Chili Peppers sound. With the return of Frusciante’s funk runs, vocalist Anthony Kiedis’ weaving and interminable lyrics over Chad Smith’s tight percussion and bassist Flea’s mindfully interspaced riffs throughout the track, all members are in full form.

The lyrics on the track explore the “Poster Children” of the 20th century, from Yoko Ono and Robert Plant to the Sandinista Popular Army and Bernie Mac. Reflectively and poetically, Kiedis raps the lyrics over sonic elements deeply inspired by many of the people he mentions and circles back to his own experience, singing, “I will be your poster child/ You know the world is ours for a little while/ And then I will be your poster child tonight.”

The Red Hot Chili Peppers furthered the feeling of nostalgia on the track by releasing an animated music video drawn in a West Coast early 90s cartoon style. The clip was directed by Julien Calemard and Thami Nabil and is only available on the band’s Facebook page.
