The Roots announced today that their festival Roots Picnic will return to the Mann at Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, for the first time in-person since 2019, on Saturday and Sunday, June 4-5.

The two-day event will see The Roots join forces with Mary J Blige for the first time ever, for a “once-in-a-lifetime set.” The festival will also welcome artists like Summer Walker, Wizkid, Kirk Franklin, Jazmine Sullivan, J Period Live Mixtape featuring Black Thought, Rick Ross, G Herbo, Mickey Guyton, Muni Long, and more. They also announced that the podcast stage will return and be curated by Wallo267 and Gillie The King.

“After a long two years, we are excited to announce the return of The Roots Picnic to Philly with two days of music and culture at the Mann at Fairmount Park,” said Shawn Gee, President of Live Nation Urban, The Roots manager, and co-founder of the event in a press release. “This year, Black Thought, Questlove and I attempted to curate a lineup that broke through the genre barriers that often separate us in black culture. To be able to book Mickey Guyton, Kirk Franklin, G Herbo, Wizkid, Wallo & Gillie, and Mary J Blige on the same lineup was a dream come true.”

It’s also notable that YouTube will serve as the host of the festival and plans to share the event on a global scale. In 2020 the Roots Picnic was entirely virtual, check out a recap here.
