On Saturday night, Tedeschi Trucks Band played the first of two three-night runs at Washington D.C.’s Warner Theatre. The band opened their second set with a memorable cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Sweet Virginia,” last played in 2019.
The group began the first set with two originals from 2016’s Let Me Get By, and 2013’s Made Up Mind, “I Want More” and “Do I Look Worried.” The first set featured lively alternations between original Tedeschi Trucks Band material and covers. Junior Wells’ “Little by Little” continued ahead of vocalist Mike Mattison’s “Life Is Crazy.”
Dann Penn’s “Sweet Inspiration,” which Tedeschi Trucks Band included on their Grammy-winning 2009 album, Already Free, preceded originals “It’s So Heavy” and “Part Of Me.” A cover of Blind Joe Reynold’s “Outside Woman” was performed before they concluded the first set with an expansive 15-minute performance of “Idle Wind.”
Set two kicked off with a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Sweet Virginia,” which Tedeschi Trucks Band last played three years ago on Feb. 2, 2019, with The Wood Brothers at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. The classic cover was on heavy rotation in 2017 when the band debuted it but otherwise was put on pause in 2018.
Next, the band played the original “Anyhow,” followed by Derek And The Dominos’ “Keep on Growing,” Dr. John’s “I Walk on Gilded Splinters,” followed by Mongo Santamaría’s “Afro Blue.”
The last two originals of the second set, “Shame” and “Midnight in Harlem,” proceeded a collection of covers which included Sleepy John Estes’ “Leaving Trunk,” Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s “Volunteered Slavery,” John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery,” Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s “Helpless and finally, Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “That Did It.” They concluded the show with an encore of “Bound For Glory.”
Tedeschi Trucks Band will play another three-night stint at D.C.’s Warner Theatre on Feb. 17 through 19. Tickets are available and can be purchased here.
