Neil Young wrote in a now-deleted open letter to his management and record label that he wants his music taken off of Spotify. He requested that the streaming service remove his songs from the platform as he doesn’t want to be associated with a company that has allowed “fake information about vaccines” to spread.
Though the letter posted on his website has been removed, a Rolling Stone article quotes Young’s note: “I am doing this because Spotify is spreading fake information about vaccines — potentially causing death to those who believe the disinformation being spread by them. Please act on this immediately today and keep me informed of the time schedule.”
“I want you to let Spotify know immediately TODAY that I want all my music off their platform,” he continued. “They can have Rogan or Young. Not both.”
The Rogan Young is referencing is Joe Rogan, who is the host of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. His platform has become increasingly controversial since the start of the pandemic and recently raised eyebrows after he brought Dr. Robert Malone on the show. Malone has compared COVID-19 safety policies to the Holocaust and has stated officials are attempting to hypnotize the public. Last month, a group of 270 doctors, professors, healthcare workers and scientists wrote a letter to Spotify to establish a clear and public policy to “moderate misinformation” on their platform. Currently, Spotify does not have a misinformation policy.
Spotify has not made a public statement regarding this issue, and Young’s music is still featured on the platform.
