Robert Glasper and special guests Rapsody, BJ The Chicago Kid, Amir Sulaiman, and DJ Jazzy Jeff performed on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday, Jan. 18, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The artists offered a captivating preview performance of Glasper’s upcoming LP Black Radio III, which is set to release on Feb. 25.

Glasper began the show playing the earnest piano riff of “In Tune,” while famed poet Amir Sulaiman seized the microphone with the spoken word rap shining a light on what it means to be African American and what the special day holds. Ending on a reiteration of the powerful refrain “we don’t play music, we pray music,” Sulaiman praises Allah and slowly stepped down from the spotlight, allowing Glasper to swiftly transition into the inspiring, bright chords of “Black Superhero.”

BJ The Chicago Kid dived into the hook, preaching to the world, with his infectious voice, “Every block, every hood, every city, every ghetto/ Need a Black superhero.” The performance closed with BJ The Chicago Kid and Rapsody harmonizing on the outro of  “Black Superhero,” which led to a moved audience and a roaring ovation.
