From Aug. 13-15, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead hosted their LOCKN’ Farm event in Arrington, Va., giving fans a slew of once-in-a-lifetime performances, covers and collaborations. Despite being impeded by weather the festival powered through and delivered a two-hour matinee set by JRAD, performances by The Slip, The Barr Brothers and “Other Shit” which featured JRAD & guests covering Pink Floyd and Allman Brothers Band hits.

The weekend kicked off with The Slip’s first East Coast show in 10 years and first since Jambase’s 20th-anniversary party two years ago. With Brad Barr on guitar, drummer Andrew Barr and bassist Marc Friedman The Slip opened with a new song and played a mix of material from throughout their career like “Get Me With Fuji,” “Paper Birds” and “Motherwolf,” as well as a cover of Paul Simon’s “The Boy In The Bubble.”

The trio re-emerged on Sunday with keyboardist Marco Benevento and singer-songwriter Nathan Moore for a few songs including “As Long as There’s One Of Us Standing.” The addition of the two musicians completed the format for their side project Surprise Me Mr. Davis.

JRAD’s two-hour matinee set on Saturday started with an improvisational jam that led into the Grateful Dead’s “The Music Never Stopped,” then “Cats Under The Stars.” They continued with classic Dead songs through a sweeping segment that contained “Cassidy” a verse of “St. Stephen,” and “Here Comes Sunshine.” The Barr Brothers came out to play “The Wheel” with JRAD and stayed on stage until they closed with “Playing In The Band.”

JRAD then came back onstage for “Other Shit” and covered Pink Floyd for a 50-minute set. The band played “Echoes” then joined “Time” with “Pigs (Three Different Ones).” JRAD closed Saturday’s “Other Shit” set with “Breathe.”

On Sunday JRAD started the day with an improvisational set with Billy Martin and John Medeski. Then devoted their “Other Shit” set to the Allman Brothers Band. The quintet was joined by The Barr Brothers drummer Andrew Barr and The Slip for their performance. They opened with “Whipping Post” on which guitarist Tom Hamilton aptly handled vocals. The set was lush with solos, harmonies and jams as they moved onto “One Way Out,” then a segment that switched back and forth from “Dreams” and “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed.” JRAD closed their festival with another two-hour set featuring covers from Pink Floyd, The Slip, the Grateful Dead, Bob Weir and more. They went nonstop except for a five-minute break where they stayed on stage.

LOCKN’ Farm will be welcoming Goose for their FRED. Festival Aug. 20 through 22. Their mini-festival will feature performances from Hiss Golden Messenger, Grateful Shred, Dawes, Cory Wong, Dr. Dog and more.
