As part of their ongoing All The Years Live video series, Grateful Dead HQ has turned back the clock to July 7, 1989 for a free-spirited “Iko Iko” live from Philadelphia’s JFK Stadium.
“One of the largest crowds to see the Grateful Dead perform live in the 1980s and 1990s, at the last-ever concert at Philadelphia’s JFK Stadium, the July 7, 1989 audience was treated with one of the best shows of 1989, a year that’s widely considered one of the most consistently great of the Dead’s 30 year touring history,” said GD archivist/legacy manager David Lemieux. “Opening with ‘Hell In A Bucket,’ the band then jumped right into their unofficial party anthem, a song that was always certain to get everyone up and dancing: ‘Iko Iko.’ This staple of the New Orleans sound at which the Dead were adept at playing was always a buoyant, ebullient entry in any Grateful Dead setlist. As you’ll see in the video, the band has much fun playing it on this night as we all had dancing to it.”

November 8, 2019 at 12:58 pmThose Summer of 1989 shows were great musically, the rain at Alpine Valley shows (3 in July 1989) saw the first two nights in hard rains with all the Tapers struggling to get any deascent Audience Recordings (most were putting the microphones into small Tents which muddied the sound altogether), but we survived and had a BLAST regardless. The last last night of Alpine 1989 my friend Jim Pikell and I sat 3 row in front of Jerry Garcia, way fun! Nothing like the good ole GRATEFUL DEAD!!! Saw them 85 times… D of KC
