Grateful Dead HQ continues their “All The Years Live” video series this week with an acoustic version of Bob Weir’s “Heaven Help The Fool,” shot live in the midst of the band’s two-night Radio City Music Hall run on 10/30/80. (Each show was presented in a three-set format: one acoustic, two electric.)
“This is the only song from Bob’s 1978 solo record Heaven Help The Fool that made it into the Dead’s setlist, aside from the one-time performance of Salt Lake City in 1995,” explains GD archivist/legacy manager David Lemieux. “This was only ever played acoustically, and without vocals, by the Grateful Dead, but they sure did have fun with it.”

October 26, 2019 at 10:45 am‘Dead Set’ was the CD (No acoustic). ‘Dead Ahead’ was the DVD. Not full shows but a great slice of material from these runs both in S.F. and at Radio City, which comprised both acoustic and electric sets. The ‘Heaven Help the Fool’ instrumental found here that we are discussing is on the ‘Bonus Tracks/Extra Features’ portion of the DVD ‘Dead Ahead’, and it’s F@$&ing great !!!!

October 26, 2019 at 10:38 amIt’s a DVD called ‘Dead Ahead’. video (not complete shows of the 10 or so show run @ Radio City) repeat: not entire shows, but a good sample of tunes from all of the show including Electric Sets, and the Famous Acoustic ones. This Heaven help The Fool gorgeous instrumental, is found in the BONUS TRACKS/BONUS FEATURES of the DVD I have.

October 25, 2019 at 1:58 pmYes, a long run, an even longer run in SF to kick it off. I couldn’t find the china/rider on the Dead Ahead DVD per the track listing on Amazon (the DVD is on Amazon Prime too). China/Rider was 2 played twice during this run, 10/29 & 10/22 but I’m not seeing the official release sadly Mr. JAGGERRICH

October 25, 2019 at 12:31 pmThis was not a 2 night run. It was over a week long as I recall, with perhaps a couple of “day” breaks in between the string of shows from October 22 -October 31!!!

October 24, 2019 at 3:25 pmThis isn’t on the official “Dead Ahead” dvd from the Radio City Run in ’80? I own a copy of it, but haven’t dusted it off in years. Cool

October 24, 2019 at 2:34 pmSecond that, this is an amazing instrumental. From that same run is the best “China/Rider” I’ve ever heard but never seen it released except on audience tapes. Why that?
Nice
