The String Cheese Incident played a four-night run in the San Francisco Bay Area last week, wrapping up with two weekend shows at Oakland’s Fox Theater that featured a guest spot from Talking Heads multi-instrumentalist Jerry Harrison and tributes to two late Grateful Dead songwriters.
On Friday night, SCI followed up a cover of “Midnight Moonlight” with their own “45th of November,” a tune co-written by keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth with Robert Hunter, the Grateful Dead lyricist that passed away last month, then rolled into a version of the Allman Brothers Band’s “Jessica.”
The next evening, the band returned to the Fox stage for another two sets that featured a couple of guests, starting with Nigerian percussionist Sikiru Adepoju, who added talking drum to SCI’s “Rivertrance.” Saturday’s second set opened with another guest, Jerry Harrison, who announced that the group would be honoring the late John Perry Barlow, another iconic Grateful Dead lyricist, with his tune “I Need A Miracle.” SCI also dedicated the ensuing “Howard” to Howee Barban, a fan who passed away recently. The packed set later included the SCI debut of Tom Petty’s “The Woods” plus Talking Heads’ “This Must Be the Place” and another cut from the Grateful Dead live catalog, “I Know You Rider,” with a interpolation of Bob Marley’s “Stir It Up.”
Check out the full setlists below, along with fan-shot footage from the Oakland shows. Next up for The String Cheese Incident is a trip to Florida’s Suwanne Hulaween festival later this month.
