After covering “Fire On The Mountain” at the Rhode Island stop of his solo tour, John Mayer continued the Grateful Dead favorites at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night, playing “Deal” and even tossing in signature, acoustic take on Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin'”
“Well that was something special,” Mayer wrote after the show via Instagram. “An unforgettable night at @thegarden. Pretty moving stuff. Thank you NYC. You’ve helped take this tour to a new level.”
The show opened with Mayer’s Continuum cut “Belief,” which was followed up with “Love on the Weekend,” off his 2017 LP The Search for Everything.
Later in the first half, Mayer offered his Grammy-winning hit “Waiting on the World to Change,” and eventually closed with Battle Studies‘ “Edge of Desire,” which he segued nicely into the aforementioned version of “Deal.”
Set two began with the acoustic portion of the evening, with unplugged takes on “Emoji of a Wave” and “In Your Atmosphere,” before Mayer invited frequent collaborator David Ryan Harris to sit in on “Free Fallin’.”
After picking up his electric guitar once more, Mayer played seven more originals from across his solo career, and closed the set with “Dear Marie.”
He encored his first of two nights at MSG with a pairing of “Gravity” and 2018’s hit “New Light.”
Mayer will return to MSG on Friday, July 26. For tickets and more information visit his official website.

July 27, 2019 at 10:51 amAt Tom Petty shows Free Fallin’ was the perfect opportunity to grab a beer and pee. Between him playing it every show and the radio overplay I was more than tired of it, and I was and am a huge Petty fan. Sitting through assclown mayer destroying it is something I would have to be paid very well to endure. Like some really good post show nook and dab hits.
