Robbie Hoddinott, former lead guitarist for Bay Area group Kingfish, passed away yesterday just one day before his 63rd birthday. Best Classic Bands reports that Hoddinott’s friend confirmed the guitarist’s death via a Facebook post and stated that he passed while at home.
Hoddinott was one of the founding members of Kingfish, which was founded in 1973 by Matthew Kelly and New Riders of the Purple Sage’s Dave Torbert. The following year, Kelly’s friend Bob Weir joined the band while the Grateful Dead were on a touring hiatus, playing shows with Kingfish and appearing on their two first studio records. Weir and Hoddinott both left the band in 1976.
Below, watch Kingfish, including Hoddinott and Weir, play San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom in 1975.

March 8, 2019 at 12:26 amI got to know Robby when I was in HS. I was amazed , when I would sit for hours and just listen to him practice. He was shy, and SO TALENTED, Very very Humble, and was one with his Guitar. It took my breath away when I learned he had passed. Robby smiled a lot back in the day.
