On Wednesday, March 5, Umphrey’s McGee pulled some help from an old friend during their concert at The Mill & Mine in Knoxville, Tenn. During the tour stop, Jake Cinninger welcomed his pre-UM bandmate in Ali Baba’s Tahini, Karl Engelmann, to assist on “Got Your Milk (Right Here).”
Before bringing out their special guest, Umphrey’s McGee began revving their musical output on “Le Blitz” which ran into “Roctopus” without pause. “Piranhas” kept the band going until Engelmann’s arrival on a time-turning “Got Your Milk,” which nodded to the guest and Cinninger’s late-90s, early aughts Ali Baba’s Tahini ensemble.
Sans Engelmann, the band kept jamming into “New Wings,” followed by “Uncle Wally” and “Forks.” Next, they played through their first cover of Steely Dan’s “Hey Nineteen” of this calendar year. Set two was a relatively standard live run through of the band’s choice numbers, that included a segue of “Resolution” > “The Fuzz” “Glory” before Talking Heads’ “Girlfriend is Better.”
Wednesday night’s concert was not the first time Engelmann has rejoined his Ali Baba’s Tahini bandmate during Tennessee tour stops. He last did so in 2019 during a stop in Chattanooga.
