Justin Vernon played in the self-described “post-Phish” jamband Mount Vernon (in high school) and its roots-oriented successor DeYarmond Edison (from 2002-2006). The group’s members first jammed together in jazz camp in their teens and took a seminal trip to the H.O.R.D.E. festival together in 1997. After DeYarmond Edison’s breakup, Vernon started recording music as Bon Iver and the remaining members of the band formed the psych folk band Megafaun.

Last night, Vernon sat in with Kanye West at a last minute show held at New York’s tiny Bowery Ballroom. Vernon sang on several songs, including “Dark Fantasy,” “All of the Lights,” “Monster,” “Hell of a Life” and “Lost in the World.” The Bon Iver singer/guitarist appears on West’s new studio album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, which the rapper performed in its entirety last night with several special guests.

Vernon is not the first musician associated with the jamband scene to play with Kayne West: Lettuce’s Jeff Bhasker served the rapper’s touring keyboardist and musical director and The Squad’s Charles Haynes played drums in West’s band.
