Roy Haynes first made a name for himself in the late 1940’s while appearing with Lester Young and then Charlie Parker. From here he gigged with Thelonious Monk, Sarah Vaughan, Stan Getz and was a member of the John Coltrane Quartet. Now in his mid-80s he remains an active performer and will celebrate the occasion of his 85th birthday over five nights in New York City. The Blue Note will host two shows an evening on March 17-21. Each of the these nights will draw in special guests to join Haynes and his quartet. Bill Cosby will MC on the 17th with Kenny Garrett joining the group. March 18 will see Roy Hargrove and Christian McBride on stage with Haynes. Chick Corea will appear in on March 19 and 20 with an as yet unannounced player slated for the 21st.
