The Georgia Theatre in Athens has been damaged by a massive fire which began earlier this morning. Police have reported that the venue became engulfed in flames shortly after 7AM. The venue has hosted numerous groups over the years, including area natives Widespread Panic, REM and the B-52s as well as such groups as Phish, RatDog, moe., Gov’t Mule, Galactic, the Disco Biscuits and Umphrey’s McGee. Perpetual Groove had been slated to open a two night stand at the venue this evening and these shows may well have to be postponed or moved. Stay tuned for additional information.
