Yesterday Ed Snider, chairman of Comcast-Spectacor, announced that Philadelphias Spectrum will shut its doors in 2009, giving way for what is expected to be a retail complex. The Spectrum opened in 1967, and was home to the Flyers and 76ers until the Wachovia Center began operations in 1996. The Grateful Dead sold out 53 shows at the Spectrum from 1968 through 1995, while Phish appeared 9 times beginning on 12/15/95. At present, it appears that the Spectrum will host the coming seasons of AHL hockey team the Philadelphia Phantoms and indoor soccer team the Philadelphia Kixx, with special musical events expected to take place as well. A listing of all the events to take place at the Spectrum can be found at http://rememberthespectrum.com.
