Trey Anastasio has spent much of the year in Atlanta working on his first studio album since parting ways with Phish. In between recording sessions, Anastasio has also taken advantage of the city’s live music scene and, as his friends have rolled into town, sat in with a number of former collaborators. A few days after joining Les Claypool onstage, Anastasio stopped by the Dave Matthews Band’s gig at the HiFi Buys Amphitheatre. Anastasio helped the group close out its set performing on extended versions of ‘Jimi Thing’ and ‘Louisiana Bayou.’
Despite their varied career paths, Anastasio’s roots with the Dave Matthews Band run deep into the mid-1990s when the group served as Phish’s opening act on several occasions. More recently, Anastasio helped his old friend support his first solo album as part of the Dave Mathews and Friends touring outfit. Anastasio and Matthews also traveled to Senegal together in early 2004.
