John Scofield, Bruce Hornsby, DJ Logic and Buddy Miles sat in with Medeski, Martin & Wood last night to close the sixth annual Gathering of the Vibes at Greig Farm in Red Hook, NY. The festival was plagued by heavy rain and thunderstorms all weekend, which forced event organizers to postpone several performances. After a five-hour rain delay on Saturday, the Thirty Year Jam honoring Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison ensued around midnight on the main stage. The house band, Blue Floyd, was joined by countless special guests including Ray Manzarek, Robert Randolph, Bernie Worrell, Brian Jordan, DJ Logic, George Porter Jr., Danyell Morgan, Jen Durkin, and Fuzz, among others. The show lasted until nearly 4 a.m. and featured a large fireworks display.
Members of Deep Banana Blackout performed with Merl Saunders on Friday during Childs Play. On Saturday, the DBB horn section took the stage with Tom Tom Club for Shes Dangerous. Mr. Rourke (turntables) jammed with Addison Groove Project on the second stage Saturday afternoon. Buddy Miles joined members of the Rafter Bats for an acoustic jam in the backstage hospitality tent Sunday afternoon. Ben Groppe (saxophone, Addison Groove Project) and Paulie (percussionist, The Maui Project, Electron) sat in with Uncle Sammy Sunday during a three-hour impromptu set in a vacant barn, which took place during yesterdays rain delay.
The festival concluded at midnight last night as Miles played drums with MMW and sang Sweet Home Chicago, which he dedicated to the late John Lee Hooker.
