Last night, John Scofield debuted his new project Electrospective at Cincinnati, OH’s Ludlow Garage. A new twist on the more groove-based work Sco has explored on occasion since 1998’s A Go Go, the ensemble unites the guitarist with Dead & Company/Allman Brothers Band bassist Oteil Burbridge, longtime keyboard collaborator Larry Goldings and Lettuce drummer Adam Deitch, who was a core part of Scofield’s funky Überjam band project.

The evening opened with “Pick Hits,” a cut from Scofield’s 1984 LP Electric Outlet that Lettuce has covered regularly and then jumped ahead to the title-track from A Go Go, which the guitarist originally recorded with the members of MMW. From there, the players shifted back to the Überjam band era for “Thikhathali,” from 2003’s Up All Night and into the 1980s for “Blue Matter,” a standout tune from the 1987 album of the same name. The quartet continued to work their way through Scofield’s catalog from there, offering the überjam tune “Jungle Fiction,” the eponymous number off 1985’s Still Warm, the A Go Go selection “Chank,” “Boogie Stupid” from 2013’s Überjam Deux, Scary Goldings’ “Bruise Cruise”—one of the keyboardist’s originals that Scofield contributed to in the studio—and “Tell You What” from 1988’s Loud Jazz. Bringing things back to Scofield’s earlier years a bit, they then capped off the set with the Blue Matter bit “Trim,” before encoring with the breezy A Go Go number “Jeep on 35.”

Electrospective will perform at Kent, OH’s Kent Stage this evening.
