Gov’t Mule made their way to Baton Rouge on Sunday. The group’s appearance at L’Auberge Casino & Hotel Baton Rouge was not part of the Dreaming The Same Dream Tour. Those performances also feature music from Ziggy Marley and tweener DJ sets from Yola. However, Yola was on hand in Baton Rouge and contributed vocals to a song.

What’s more, a special area guest joined in the action as well, as New Orleans native George Porter Jr. appeared midway through the Mule’s performance. The legendary Meters bassist has been a steady collaborator ever since recording on the band’s 2002 album The Deep End, Volume 2. Porter contributed bass and sang lead on The Meters’ classic “Hey Pocky A-Way,” which was last played by the Mule (with Porter) on 12/10/22. The five musicians then charged into “Sneakin’ Sally Through The Alley,” the title track to the 1974 Robert Palmer album, produced by Allen Toussaint, on which Porter and the Meters backed Palmer. The bass player remained for “Lady Marmalade,” a Gov’t Mule debut. Porter originally played on Labelle’s version of the song, which was another Toussaint production from ’74. The guest bassist remained for one final tune, The Meters’ “Just Kissed My Baby.”

The Baton Rouge show also included some other moments of note. Gov’t Mule offered the first version of the instrumental “Flip Wilson” since 9/25/2017, a span of 507 shows. In addition, the group performed “Broke Down On The Brazos,” revisiting the tune after a 97 show gap, going back to 2/24/24.

The band also treated fans to a second encore. First up was a cover of “Me And Bobby McGee” with Yola singing lead. Then the four members of Gov’t Mule delivered a closing take on “Soulshine.”

The Dreaming The Same Dream Tour resumes this evening in Sugar Land, TX.
