The String Cheese Incident performed in Africa for the first time this past weekend, offering three two-set shows at Marrakech, Morocco’s Villa Marco as part of their Moroccan Incident destination event. The String Cheese Incident percussionist Jason Hann, who traveled to Morocco with Relix to preview to the event, played a special welcome party at the start of the festivities, and popular area-bred rock band Meteor Airlines supplied support duties on Friday, the second day of String Cheese’s three-night stand.

Each show also included some notable musical moments. String Cheese kicked off their first show with an always welcome “Born On The Wrong Planet” and closed their second set with a run from Steppenwolf’s “Magic Carpet Ride” into “Rollover,” “Land’s End,” “Glory Chords” and “San José.” Then, on Friday, the ensemble concluded their first set with a segue from Talking Heads’ “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)” into “Fete Tama.” Fittingly, they also encored with a cover of Paul Simon’s “Under African Skies,” a tune they have played about 80 times since 2000.

Finally, on Saturday, String Cheese opened their second set by inviting out Essaouira-based gnawa musician and guembri player Hind Ennaira and her friends for a series of traditional jams, shortly before the destination event came to a close with Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” during their encore. Notably, camel rides were also available during that final show.

The String Cheese Incident will return to Live Oak, FL for their annual Huluween event from October 23-25.
