Gov’t Mule’s summer run with Joe Bonamassa came to a close over the weekend and, each night, the two acts shared the stage for a few unique moments. On Friday at Interlochen, MI’s Interlochen Center for the Arts, Bonamassa emerged at the end of Gov’t Mule’s set for an Allman Brothers Band classic, “Whipping Post.” Warren Haynes returned the favor during Bonamassa’s set as well, appearing on Kenny Neal’s “If Heartaches Were Nickels.”
Then, the next night at Welch, MN’s Treasure Island Resort & Casino, two members of Bonamassa’s backing band, guitarist Josh Smith and B3 player Lachy Doley, took the stage with the Mule on their first reading of the Allen Toussaint-penned “Get Out My Life, Woman” since February 16, 2024. Next, the blues guitarist himself swapped in for another Allman Brothers Band chestnut, “Dreams.” Haynes filtered out during Bonamassa’s set too, once again appearing on “If Heartaches Were Nickels.”
Finally, yesterday at Lincoln, NE’s Pinewood Bowl Theater, during their last show together this summer, Bonamassa sat in with Gov’t Mule on Ann Peebles’ “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home” while Haynes appeared on “How Blue Can You Get?” by Johnny Moore’s Three Blazers during Bonamassa’s portion of the show. Also of note, a few tunes into their set, Gov’t Mule busted out “Lola Leave Your Light On,” which appears on 2004’s Déjà Voodoo, for the first time since October 23, 2022.
Gov’t Mule will appear at Livingston, MT Pine Creek Lodge tomorrow while Bonamassa’s tour will resume at Cheyenne, WY’s Cheyenne Civic Center on Wednesday.
