Phish made their debut at Boulder, CO’s Folsom Field football stadium last night. The show marked the Vermont Quartet’s first appearance in Boulder since 1993, save for a 1998 radio taping, and was their first Colorado play not at Commerce City, CO’s Dick’s Sporting Goods Park since they started playing the venue annually in 2011. It was also one of the group’s largest non-festival headlining shows to date.
The night opened with an 11-plus minute variation on “Wolfman’s Brother” and then moved into an over 12-minute take on “Tube.” From there, Phish offered their spin in Ween’s “Roses Are Free” for the first time since July, 16, 2022, before segueing into “Maze.” Standalone versions of “Bouncing Around the Room” and Hot Rize’s “Nellie Kane,” a fitting selection given the show’s Colorado location, arrived next. Near the end of their first set, following an elongated “Kill Devil Falls,” Phish also offered another segue from “Sand” into a 15-minute “Fluffhead.”
The band presented a seamless segment to kick off their second set, kicking off with “Carini” and a uniquely placed, 20-plus minute “You Enjoy Myself” that slid into a 17-minute “Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley.” They paused briefly and then launched into “Light” and The Siket Disc gem “What’s the Use?,” closing the set with a run from the new jam vehicle “Pillow Jets” into “Also Sprach Zarathustra” and a rocking “Possum.” An almost nine-minute “Stash” and their first cover of the Osborne Brothers bluegrass tune “Rocky Top” since December 28, 2019 brought the night to an end.
Phish will return to Folsom this evening for a July 4th concert.
