In honor of the day of Jerry Garcia’s passing (Aug. 9), Patti Smith shared a performance of her song “Grateful.” Dedicated to Garcia, the song was written on Aug. 9 25 years ago, the day the late guitarist passed away.
Smith played acoustic guitar for the performance, and she was joined by her daughter Jesse Paris Smith, who played keyboard.
“I wrote the song for Jerry Garcia on his passing day, August 9, 1995, twenty-five years ago. One common wire, one silver thread refers to a strand of Jerry’s hair. Simple and beloved,” wrote Smith in the caption. Check out the performance of the song below!

August 10, 2020 at 8:53 pmJerry was a beatnik kid who became an archetypal hippie. Patti was a hippie kid who became an archetypal punk. At first glance, there music seems worlds apart. What they shared was a singular, uncompromising vision regarding their art, and a treasure trove of music that will echo down through the ages.
