This past weekend at the Warfield in San Francisco Phil Lesh debuted some old material and some new friends. A few faces proved familiar as Phil and Friends drumming stalwart John Molo was on hand along with guitarist Jimmy Herring and P&F alum Barry Sless on pedal steel guitar. Rookies included the tandem of Chris Robinson on vocals and Particles Steve Molitz on keys. In addition, long time Jerry Garcia Band vocalists Gloria Jones and Jackie LaBranch contributed over the course of the weekend as did Railroad Earths Tim Carbone and John Skehan. Meanwhile, Dave Ellis, who originally transposed many of the Jerry Garcia guitar lines onto sax in the initial incarnation of the Other Ones, participated as well. The group offered quite a bit of new material including versions of ‘What’s Become Of The Baby’ with Phil on vocals along with Pigpen’s The Stranger (Two Souls In Communion). The range of covers included takes on such songs as Everybody Wants Somebody To Love, and Next Time You See Me. Phil and his Friends also offered bonus visuals, as occasionally during the three nights, members of the band would perform from the balcony over stage right in various configurations. Phil Lesh will return to the stage with some Friends at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium on February 12.
