The Green Apple Music and Arts Festival will take place from April 20-23 at over 30 venues throughout the New York-metropolitan area. In addition to performances by the likes of Richie Havens, The Slip, Assembly of Dust, Soulive, Bill Frisell, Baaba Maal, Strangefolk, Mike Doughty, Mickey Hart and Ghostface, Green Apple will also host a number of bands in venues they have long outgrown. After making their Jammys debut, Blues Traveler, who frequent ballroom-size venues like the Nokia Theater, will perform at the tiny, 200-seat ROTHKO late-night on April 20. A day later, Particle, who headlined the 1,000-capacity Irving Plaza during its last trip to New York, will visit the Bowery Ballroom, while Bela Fleck and the Flecktones will cut their standard seat space by a third for sets at the B.B. King Blues Club on April 21 and Irving Plaza on April 22. After coming just a few seats shy of selling out the Nokia last month, Umphreys McGee will play cradle-size punk womb CBGBs on April 22, as Guster, who sold at the Radio City Music Hall in 2003, will make their debut at the 500-person Hiro Ballroom. If you’ve been shut out of these intimate venues you can also sign up at greenapplemusicfestival.com to help table at venues throughout the city (perhaps even at the aforementioned, sure-to-sell-out Umphrey’s performance).
