My Morning Jacket took its most extended touring break in some time in late 2007 to complete work on its fifth studio album, Evil Urges. On Monday MMJ returned to the road with special guests Yo La Tengo for a performance at Houston’s Verizon Wireless Theater. The group opened their performance with Evil Urges’ title cut and, over the course of the night, debuted a number of songs, including ‘I’m Amazed,’ ‘Highly Suspicious,’ ‘Thank You Too,’ ‘Sec Walkin,’ ‘Aluminum Park,’ ‘Smokin From Shootin’ and ‘Touch Me Part 2.’ While still firmly rooted in psychedelic-rock, the band’s new numbers are even farther removed from My Morning Jacket’s acoustic-roots than even 2005’s Z, at times recalling Prince more than Neil Young. For older fans, the quintet also offered some older songs, including ‘Off The Record,’ ‘Gideon,’ ‘What A Wonderful Man,’ ‘Golden,’ ‘The Way He Sings,’ ‘Wordless Chorus,’ ‘One Big Holiday,’ ‘Run Thru,’ ‘Dondante,’ ‘Lay Low,’ ‘Mahgeetah’ and ‘Anytime.’ My Morning Jacket will perform at the Austin Music Hall Thursday evening with Yo La Tengo and The Whigs as part of the SXSW music conference.
