Though he has spent the past few years on the pop charts, Carlos Santanas roots in live, improvisational music. Last week, Santana returned to San Francisco’s Fillmore for an intimate two-night run that found the guitar-led ensemble favoring jams over the pop-rock characteristic of groups early-millennium period. Each night the Santana band offered a three-hour, two-set show that included chestnuts like Gypsy Queen and Oye Como Va, as well as a nod to Jerry Garcia. The guitarists brother Jorge Santana, a noted-musician in his own right, also played guitar alongside his brother for the first time in years on a version of Soul Sacrifice. As if to nod to his shift in style, Santana wore one of his bands vintage t-shirts and a fishermans cap, instead of the black hat he has favored since returning to prominence with 1999s Supernatural. Santana will appear next in Birmingham, England on June 20.
