New Yorks Highline Ballroom hosted back-to-back jam-sessions last week that recalled the areas now fabled Wetlands Preserve. This past Thursday The Roots hosted its second night of its extended residency at the Highline and invited out Eric Krasno for an improvisational segment. In addition, the group brought both Living Colours Cory Glover and noted jazz singer Eddie Bridgewater to the stage, the latter for a tribute to Etta James. The members of the Antibalas also continued to develop their relationship with The Roots by sitting in at various points throughout the night.
Krasno returned the following night for an official Allman Brothers Band after party at the Meat Packing district venue. Ivan Neville and Dumpstaphunk hosted the late-night show and brought out the Soulive guitarist for Greasy Groceries and Livin’ In A World Gone Mad near the end of the groups first set. Nevilles Keith Richards & the X-Pensive Winos collaborator Charlie Drayden then took the stage to play drums on a James Brown medley that referenced both Soul Power and Super Bad. Later in the night, both Warren Haynes and Govt Mule keyboardist Danny Louis also took the stage for a few songs. Haynes ended up performing for a large portion of Nevilles set, including on Keep On Marching, Steve Miller Bands Fly Like An Eagle, Wars Slippin’ Into Darkness, Creedence Clearwater Revivals Fortunate Son and the theme.
Dumpstaphunk will return to the Highline Ballroom this Friday for another Allman Brothers Band post-party. Several guests are expected, including the possibility of some repeats.
