In what was the start of whirlwind day, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir and Warren Haynes appeared on ABC’s The View this morning. There, the three performed the classic Jerry Garcia-Robert Hunter composition ‘Friend of the Devil.’ While Garcia was the lead vocalist on the Grateful Dead version of the song, Lesh, Weir and Haynes all shared duties for this take on ‘Friend.’ In addition, Lesh sang a verse that never made it into Garcia’s arrangement of the song. The trio’s interpretation may well resurface again tonight during any of the three Dead today performances in New York City (Angel Orensanz, The Gramercy Theatre, Roseland). Stay tuned for reports on the three gigs, later today on Jambands.com.
