Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band rolled into Los Angeles on Tuesday for another performance on their Land of Hope and Dreams tour. Onstage at the Kia Forum, Springsteen and his tireless backing band presented another three-hour show charged with urgent political messages and featuring frequent sit-ins from special guest Tom Morello.
Springsteen and his ensemble delivered a total of 27 songs through the third performance on their tour, tailored to the most impactful and socially engaged entries from the frontman’s catalog. After beginning with Edwin Starr’s 1970 protest anthem “War,” which Springsteen performed for the first time since 2003 at the tour opener, the band and Morello bolted into an electrifying “Born in the U.S.A.” and “Death to My Hometown,” followed by a resurrected cover of The Clash’s “Clampdown.” The London Calling cut figured into Springsteen’s performances seven times in 2014, while Morello was filling in with the E Street Band for Steven Van Zandt, and the Boss hadn’t performed it in the 12 years since.
Outside the unexpected bust-out, the rest of Springsteen’s setlist stuck to the thoroughly honed program that appeared in Portland and Minneapolis. That rigidity has enabled the icon to center his performance on a focused message, which resounded both through his repertoire and in candid addresses delivered between songs. Later in the show, Morello returned for “American Skin (41 Shots)” and “Long Walk Home,” then lent his talents to a set-closing movement through “The Ghost of Tom Joad,” “American Skin” and “Land of Hope and Dreams.” To cap off the show, the full company offered an encore that began with “Born to Run” and culminated in a finale of Bob Dylan’s “Chimes of Freedom.”
Springsteen’s vocal criticism of the Trump administration that spurred his return to the road this year has already drawn a response from the President himself, who instructed MAGA to boycott the rest of the tour after the first show.
Springsteen will perform at the Kis Forum again tonight, then move on to San Francisco on April 13. Find tickets and more information on the Land of Hope and Dreams Tour at brucespringsteen.net.
