On March 15, the final installment of Unbroken Chain: A Celebration of the Life and Music of Phil Lesh occurred at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y. Last night’s concert coincided with bassist Phil Lesh’s 86th birthday. It continued the venue’s time-honored tradition of marking the occasion through select songs and on-stage festivities in recognition of the Grateful Dead’s melodic backbone. During Grahame Lesh and Friends’ final night on stage during the East Coast concert series, the group helped assert some sage advice: Never miss a Sunday show.
Sunday’s return to The Capitol Theatre stage saw Grahame Lesh retain his status as bandleader, leading a rotating cast of musicians that included Dave Schools, Stanley Jordan, Steve Molitz, Holly Bowling, Tony Leone, Cody Dickinson, Kanika Moore, Amy Helm, Larry Campbell, Teresa Williams, and Sam Grisman. Last night’s concert featured a pairing from the jump, “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” before “Ship of Fools.”
Next, the group of on-stage players picked up the weekend trend of selecting material from the Dead’s first decade on the circuit, choosing “Till The Morning Comes” and “Deep Elem Blues.” “Tennessee Jed” continued the aforementioned motif, as well as “Friend of the Devil.” For the final song of set one, the group stuck up a rendition of “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You),” a number often associated with Garcia’s solo career, despite appearing on setlists put out by Phil Lesh & Friends and the Terrapin Family Band.
After breaking for the show’s midsection, members resumed their slots for the second set entry, “Dark Star,” followed by a nod to the Phil Lesh & Friends’ trend of inserting “Over the Rainbow” instrumentals, a move associated with Stanley Jordan. “Here Comes Sunshine” ensued, ahead of the Lesh/ Robert Hunter co-write “Pride of Cucamonga,” which was left unfinished and swapped for “Bird Song.” In time, the latter collided with “The Other One” and “Stella Blue.”
The group’s pick of “The Other One,” and later, “Cassidy,” nodded to the late Bobby Weir. “Not Fade Away” functioned as the second set’s final number and a fitting sentiment for the continuation of 300 years of Grateful Dead music. During the night’s encore, venue owner Peter Shapiro and Grahame Lesh led the audience in a rendition of “Happy Birthday,” maintaining the venue’s celebratory tradition as it pertains to Phil Lesh. Lastly, the group delivered two final songs, a reflective “Attics of My Life” and a on-the-money “Box of Rain.”
