Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds returned to Cancún’s Moon Palace Resort last night for their first headline set in the 2026 Dave & Tim Riviera Maya destination event. After their ninth annual getaway commenced on Wednesday with appearances from bluegrass pathbreakers Trampled By Turtles and Americana powerhouse Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Matthews and Reynolds took the stage on Thursday to welcome their fans with an action-packed 26-track introduction.
Matthews and Reynolds set off the first of their three Riviera Maya performances with a cover of Jimmy Buffett’s “A Pirate Looks at Forty,” delivered by the duo for the first time since 2017, then quickly dove into a litany of tried and true cuts like “Seek Up,” “The Best of What’s Around,” “Busted Stuff” and “Satellite” before their duo debut of Matthews’ 2006 essential “Idea of You.” The evening’s next big surprise came three tracks later, when Reynolds delivered a solo version of his 2016 track “A Tangled Web We Weave,” introduced by his first rendition of the opening passage to 1993’s “Impermanence” since 2003.
When they arrived at the show’s midpoint, Matthews and Reynolds paid their respects to the late Bob Weir and acknowledged his foundational influence on improvisational rock with two Grateful Dead classics. The duo’s cover of “Friend of the Devil” was the first since a rendition by the Dave Matthews Band in July 2015, the ensuing “Casey Jones” was an outright live debut, and both odes were amplified by a raucous string accompaniment from Trampled By Turtles. After a tongue-in-cheek placement of “Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin),” the duo welcomed another guest spot as show opener and celebrated folk singer-songwriter Joy Oladokun lent her talents to “The Maker.”
Matthews and Reynolds built steam through the last movement of their expansive set with other fan favorites like “The Raven,” which featured solo teases of “TSA” and “Sleep” from Matthews, and Reynolds’ solo take on his 2000 original “Jemez Rolling Waves.” After a satisfying set-closer of the beloved “Grey Street,” amtthews emerged again to introduce the encore with a solo “Here On Out,” then the duo finally capped off night one with a stirring finale of “Lie in Our Graves.”
Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds will deliver another performance tonight, supported by “discodelic” soul vocal trio Say She She, then wrap up the residency on Saturday. Learn moore about the Riviera Maya destination event at daveandtimrivieramaya.com.
